I feel you when you say you want people to want to feel depth... I've tried to tell this to my friends but it's difficult to convince someone to "feel". I honestly think the best way to convince someone of this is not by literally explaining to them why they should want to feel depth, but by giving them depth worthy experiences. This can be a conversation about something you're passionate about (passion is contagious), a movie that makes you think more than it makes you fall asleep, and of course, a book that you resonate with.
Talk about nailing what we are so willing to accept in our shallow literary seas. I am a hungry consumer of low calorie literature. The problem is this. Where, in this electronic age, do I find that DEEPER , meatier sustenance my brain is searching for? Reviews and publishers catch phrases are vague yet just alluring enough to catch the public interest. I will never get through the 1,000+ books in my electronic tbr pile so why do I keep adding to it ? Simple. It’s called “still looking “.
I would rather have 10 books that I was sure about rather than 1,000 that I had no clue about.
I now, thanks to you, have decided that I am going to destroy my electronic tbr file. I will no longer download books just because they are free by signing up for the authors newsletter. I will create a top10 “Authors I like” list and stick to it.
This should make it easier to delete the 5,000+ emails flooding my inbox. Seriously!
I can’t remember the substance or plots of most of what I have read over the last couple of years because they ARE forgettable.
