This: “Embracing the concept of "good enough" employment: A job that pays fairly, treats you decently, and leaves you with energy for life outside work might be the actual dream—not because it's perfect, but because it's sustainable.”
My attitude is that I need a “good enough” job to fund what I do for fulfillment. I had a conversation with a coworker one day about working 1st shift versus 2nd (I work 2nd and I don’t have a goal to get to 1st). Her rationale for 1st shift being better was because her most productive time of day is in the morning. I said mine is too and I use it for doing the things that I love and that bring me fulfillment. Work gets the leftovers, but the leftovers are pretty good because I’ve already had half a day to do what brings me joy.
I needed this today. I've had a challenging couple of weeks, and those nagging thoughts started creeping in - you know, the "what if I abandoned it all and moved to a beach" type of thoughts. The truth is I have *everything* I once dreamed of. If I told the me of three years ago where I am today, she would have cried with happiness. I'm not sure why we're programmed to slowly become discontent, to search for the holes in our happiness, and expect perfection in every experience, but I'm holding on to that sentiment that the challenges I feel at this moment are opportunities for growth and not a symptom of a deeper issue. Thank you!
THIS^^ apologies in advanced for the novel below lol
I was looking for you to mention Australia in the cultures with different relationships to work
Moving from New York to Sydney I realized how tied everyones identity was to their jobs
In New York its “what do you do for work”
In Sydney its “where do you get your coffee or what gym do you go to?”
I realized my “dream career path” was a myth. long term i have no idea what i want to do. ive learned to hone in on certain skills, follow what i like and whats working for me and go from there.
Moving abroad has allowed me to explore other activities that Iim interested and realize I'm not just my job and how I perform. I really love this quote to look at jobs that “offers opportunities for human connection, skill development, and contribution.” that is the key to working...
I hate to ask this question but… what is your full time job?
DUDE I WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT AUSTRALIAN WORK CULTURE WITH MY LITTLE SISTER AN HOUR AGO 🤯 I was telling her I'd love to do an extended vacay there one day!
AH I love this SO much. I work as an emergency nurse, and been having this convo with lots of friends and coworkers lately. I don’t love my job, but I love the life that it enables me to live. And that, to me, is what matters most. 🫶🏼
Loved this! I've been on a long journey to separate my identity from work. It's easy to get caught up in the notion that your career defines your purpose in life. No wonder many of us end up burnt out. Since changing my relationship with work, I've had so much more energy for the things that truly bring joy to my life, like my relationships, writing, and being more playful.
for me the work boundaries have been such a saving point. like just acknowledging the “can this wait until tomorrow” pull inside my gut when ive clocked out and still get emails. The, “this is outside my scope of work” announcements and real energy level check-ins
I love this! Even though I'm passionate about my field, it's not my whole personality. As humans, we are like diamonds with multiple facets, and a job simply gives us the privilege of creating the life we want.
I have to say I wish I read this Article 30 years ago. When I was a child. It has opened a new perspective on life. A new outlook on work and life. Thank you for writing it. I needed to hear/ read this today
Incredibly validating. Recently it seems everyone in my social circle is doing better than me professionally. This eased the anxiety. My job allows me so much time and energy to pursue my passions. They do not have to overlap. Thank you for sharing!
Girl! You are on fire. I am brand new to writing, but I have many stories to share, mine will not live up to yours but I want to be the kind of writer you are, of course in my own way. Thanks for sharing!!

YES! I have had to work so hard on the "this can wait" thing.

YES! I wrote an affirmation using the diamond metaphor the other day for this exact same topic!
👏👏👏
