Breaking Free from the Productivity Prison

Day 3 of our 10 days to creative freedom work shop

This workshop is definitely for you guys… but as I’ve developed it, I’ve realized how much I needed to revisit my own techniques, too. (Become a paid subscriber for $5 a month for full access, or, read the article that introduced the concept, You’re Enough, from our community’s open-access library.)

Especially this week, as we explore the idea that creative worth is measured in output—the notion that somehow, we're only "real writers" if we're producing consistently, prolifically, perfectly.

Join my creative revolution as we build a community where every voice matters and every story finds its home. Together, we'll unlock our boldest voices, and build a fearless writing community, together—are you ready to join the uprising? ✨📝👇

I used to have a sticky note on my desk that listed my daily writing goals. Word counts. Post frequencies. Engagement metrics. For both my clients, and for myself. I thought these numbers would keep me accountable week by week.

Instead, they kept me imprisoned.

Here's what I've learned: Productivity isn't the same as creativity. Productivity is linear—it wants more, faster, better. Creativity is cyclical (ahem, have you read my article about creating a circular creative community yet? 😉)—it needs fallow periods, rest, and integration.

When we try to force our creative practice into a productivity model, we miss the magic that happens in the quiet moments. In the pause between thoughts. In the space where ideas germinate before they're ready to bloom.

Unlearning the productivity mindset isn't about becoming less productive—it's about becoming more aligned with our natural creative rhythms. It's about trusting that our creativity knows its own timing.

Think about a garden. You can't force a seedling to grow faster by writing down goals, or strategically planning a “millimeters per day” plan for it.

You can only create the conditions for growth and trust the process.
